Sharrow MX-1: This toroidal boat propeller could be be top of the props

new boat prop design

They regularly double the speed a boat can achieve at lower and mid-range RPMs, radically broadening the effective rev range of the motor. And they reduce fuel consumption by somewhere around 20% – a seriously big deal given the huge energy requirements of propeller-driven boats and the scale of the industry. As if it wasn’t already hard enough to choose the best propeller for your fishing boat, a company called Sharrow Marine has developed a completely different kind of prop. Basic propeller design hasn’t changed in close to a century—until now—with what might best be called a “loop” propeller. Essentially, rather than having blades that grip the water to provide thrust, it has metal loops on its hub.

For 150- 450 HP outboard motors and sterndrives

By decreasing and even eliminating tip cavitation and vortices, the Sharrow models also dramatically reduce noise and energy loss when a boat cruises through open waters. Additional benefits include 50% more reverse thrust, 30% more range, less vibration, and doubled speed at mid-range RPMs. Putting its products to the test, Sharrow demonstrates in the below video the dramatic difference in noise production between a standard propeller and its toroidal design. Sharrow Marine has been getting frankly spectacular results from boat propellers that use loops instead of standard blades. After several years of development, the company has now tested its props against hundreds of standard propellers, and the difference is incredible.

Does size matter? 350hp vs 300hp outboard in head-to-head test

Within a few attempts, the team indeed found a design that reduced not only overall noise levels at a given thrust level, but particularly noise in the 1-5 kHz range. Third-party testing has shown an overall nine- to 15-percent efficiency advantage, higher top-end speeds reduced vibration levels, reduced sound levels, and enhanced handling. On the plus side, only $100 of that is due on preorder and deliveries won't begin until Spring 2026 (Northern Hemisphere), leaving plenty of time to ponder that additional $8895+.

The Best Way to Measure for a New Inboard Propeller Shaft

Since then it has already won an award for innovation and the company says it is now in discussion with a number of major propeller and engine manufacturers. He wanted to use camera drones to film performers in action but soon found that their microphones would pick up the noise of the drones. He realised that most of this noise was not being created by the drone’s tiny electric motors but by the propeller tip vortices. And remember, many times there can be 2 propellers that do the same job, but look different and have different dimensions. Your neighbor may have the same boat/engine combo with a different propeller, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have the wrong one. Most service technicians at your dealership will be able to discuss propeller options and how they will affect your specific boat.

Over 12 years Experience in Custom Prop Work.

The contra-rotating propeller is a fairly simple concept that features two propellers rotating in opposite directions around the same shaft. The independent and opposite rotations counter the energy otherwise lost in tangential flow, better focusing it on the thrust that drives the boat. The drive system then runs more efficiently than a comparable single-prop drive, resulting in a vessel with improved acceleration and speed, better fuel efficiency or a combination of both. However, extensive sea trials carried out by US website boattest.com on the new Sharrow Propeller MX-1 seem to confirm all of the above and show efficiency gains of between 9-15% over comparable 3-blade propeller designs. The result is a closed loop design that looks like a couple of opposed inclined boomerangs joined at the tips.

Ultra-efficient looped propeller gets contra-rotating double upgrade

"I had an intern of mine, who was just absolutely phenomenal, run with the idea. He took the concept and created a bunch of iterations using 3D printers." As of this writing, the new cast props weren’t yet being mass-produced and the company hadn’t yet announced pricing. But Sharrow says they will be “only slightly more expensive and competitive with” old-school props, and they expect to have the casting operation running full-tilt in short order.

Whether you are producing a hero prop, color correct art, or retooling your logo, DesignTown USA will create the perfect design for your message. Because in our high tech world today where CGI is used so often, the use of high-quality, attention-grabbing props are even more effective than ever in getting the consumer to take notice. Pitch is calculated by the theory that if a 12 pitch propeller is moving through a solid structure, one revolution—or turn—of the propeller will move it forward 12 inches.

‘The key thing that we thought was making the propellers quieter, was the fact that you’re now distributing the vortices that are being generated by the propeller across the whole shape of it, instead of just at the tip. That vortex doesn’t propagate as far, so you’re less likely to hear it,‘ continues Sebastian. It has also modelled and simulated tests on toroidal boat propellers up to 9.87m in diameter for displacement trawler yachts, container ships and even super tankers, all of which have shown similar theoretical efficiency gains. Much of this modelling and prototype work was carried out by the University of Michigan’s Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory and involved scale tank testing to prove its findings. Regarding hydrodynamics, Sharrow Marine has developed a range of propellers that significantly advance rotor technology, which halted after the 1830s. Designed as twisted loops instead of traditional blades, the devices have ‘solved the most basic problem of rotary propulsion.

There is a wide range of choices and price points, so I recommend talking this through with the experts before making a decision. For instance, here at Barletta Boats, we try to find a middle ground prop that allows the motor to spin close to its max RPM. This way, you’re getting a propeller that is made for your boat and will achieve near-peak performance without breaking the bank. I’ve driven numerous different types of boats and have always been pleased with the propeller that was included from the factory every time. Choosing a propeller can be subjective depending on your performance goals, but different engines and hull designs do play into selecting the best prop.

If you’re new to boating, you may have realized that there are so many things to learn before stepping foot on your new vessel. Learning everything there is to know about maintaining and operating the boat can be a chore in itself. We’re so confident that you’ll be satisfied with your prop’s performance that we offer a 30-day money-back guarantee on every propeller we sell. Our shipping and return policies make shopping for your prop easy and worry-free.

To reduce emissions, cargo ships have to switch to low-emission fuel sources like green methanol. That would involve redesigning new ships, retrofitting old ones, and building the coastal infrastructure to refuel them. He said that Sharrow Marine produces up to 1,300 propellers a month at its facilities in Detroit and that the company had months' worth of back orders to catch up on through a supply collaboration with Yamaha. His plan is to scale up to make hundreds of thousands of propellers each year. "You can get quite a substantial hum of all those propellers that can potentially cover up that natural noise," Halpern said. Indeed, the company says this is a propeller you can stick on more or less any outboard motor, then blast along at 30 mph (48 km/h) quietly enough to have a conversation on board without raising your voice.

"The key thing that we thought was making the propellers quieter, was the fact that you're now distributing the vortices that are being generated by the propeller across the whole shape of it, instead of just at the tip," says Sebastian. "Which then makes it effectively dissipate faster in the atmosphere. That vortex doesn't propagate as far, so you're less likely to hear it." The tests were carried out on a 20ft Bayliner VR5 sportsboat fitted with a standard Mercury 150hp outboard engine, comparing Sharrow’s new tipless MX-1 against two market leading boat propellers. The Sharrow Propeller™ is the first major advancement in propeller technology since the 1830s. Specifically, tip cavitation and vortices have been eliminated or significantly reduced, transforming your entire boating experience.

What’s going on here is an attempt to eliminate the cavitation and vortices created by “normal” propellers at the blade tips. Do so, and you should see speed and efficiency boosts plus a drop in vibration. By creating a propeller with the blades replaced by loops, there are essentially no tips whatsoever. These swirling pockets of turbulence are caused by high-pressure air on one side of the blade rushing round to meet the low pressure air on the other, creating induced drag, noise and vibration.

Benjamin Moore’s Woodlawn Blue contrasts with the beadboard painted in the company’s Swiss Coffee shade. Arrayed around the custom rift white oak table are Crate & Barrel chairs. Kristina also had the difficult task of serving as a judge for a recent season 5 episode, an experience that brought "mixed emotions." The 66-year-old announced plans to airlift the home via helicopter to a safer location. A modern farmhouse in Arcadia takes on an air of sophistication, thanks to clean lines and sleek, mix of stone and stucco. Amazingly, future homeowners could mail order all the pieces they needed for a basic farmhouse.

“Although the color palette and textures were inspired by the beach, we wanted the home to feel comfortable year round,” says designer Dan Scotti. A wall of steel windows with three sets of French doors floods the kitchen with natural light, creating a glow that seemingly emanates from white oak floors and marble surfaces. Nuevo chairs and a slim profile farm table with a metal base allows the view to take center stage. While they are usually built on large pieces of land, you'll also find them in suburban developments now. They also have a variety of regional differences—just compare a farmhouse in a New England orchard to one beside fields of grain in the Great Plains. Last year, the pair teamed up on Rock the Block's Kitchen Showdown and starred together on Farmhouse Fixer's second season during a renovation of a home owned by their family. For Knight — who first catapulted to fame in the late '80s as a member of the New Kids on the Block with bandmates Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood and younger brother Jordan — his home design life has become a family affair. The eight-episode season takes them to homes with centuries of history within their walls and bringing their fair share of challenges. For Jon and Kristina, it's all about sharing their passion for preserving these special projects. "There's a lot of old houses, and they're just a part of American history. It's a shame to see a lot of them disappearing and being torn down," Jon told Country Living.

"I'm so used to doing things that are New Kids related with my brother but then, all of a sudden, we're talking about kitchen sinks and stuff. But it was pretty cool to have him and the family on the show." In the clip above, viewers can see the brothers cautiously entering the rickety old cabin in the woods, knocking down shaky walls, and dealing with unexpected problems like dangerous black mold. "I'm starting to think to myself, 'What have I done?'" Jonathan says in the video. "This year is gong to be a bit intense," says Knight, 55, of the eight episode season, which premieres Tuesday, April 23. From uncovering hidden underground wells to moving a fully-constructed home to a new location, Jonathan Knight has faced many challenges while restoring properties on the first two seasons of HGTV's Farmhouse Fixer. Season 3 of Farmhouse Fixer takes Jon and Kristina to new heights — literally.

The structures were based on the classic colonial farmhouse's rectangular design and were often two-stories tall. Even better, they could easily be added on to with wings out the side or rear of the home to accommodate new family members or the next generation of families. Large long porches that beautifully connected the outdoors to the indoors was a standard feature that provided the residents with a place to relax in the shade. The original exterior colors for these houses were relatively limited and premixed in a choice of white, light green, pale yellow, light blue, and a few dark colors, notably red. When it comes to contemporary home trends, farmhouse style is a huge buzz word. But you may be surprised to learn that the roots of farmhouse architecture have humble beginnings in the modest rural houses built by American pioneers throughout the 1700s and 1800s.

These deep-fried prawns have a satisfying crunch, and come served on a leaf lined with a sweet-acidic mixture of lime juice, tamarind, ginger, and toasted coconut.

It was most recently home to the late Hilda Rolfe, the widow of Sam Rolfe, co-creator of the series The Man from Uncle. Video of the property from December 2022 shows a light-filled home that appears to have been well-preserved, with large windows, wood floors and mid-century furniture. This isn't the first time Jordan has appeared on the network with his older brother.

Key Characteristics of the Classic Farmhouse

From cups decorated with LED crowns to tacky tiki head mugs, the drinks at Farmhouse Kitchen are about as colorful and gaudy as the restaurant itself. Fortunately, they all taste pretty good (especially if you like your cocktails on the sweeter side). One former soldier in the area,  Lance Martin, made headlines after he twice physically moved his bungalow farther away from the shore, according to SWNS.

At Farmhouse, our mission is to support local artisanal and boutique producers who are conscious of what goes into their products and how they are produced. Our simple, flavorful and creative dishes are not only inspired by the ingredients themselves, but the network of friends who supply us with the quality ingredients that Farmhouse is known for. In the kitchen, the custom hood, fabricated by Tin Works, Inc., above the Wolf range feels funky and modern, as do brass elements such as the Waterworks faucet above the Kohler farmhouse sink.

My partner and I went several times during our trip to LA and even brought friends. My favorite dish is the branzino and volcano noodles, still thinking about it. When the temperature drops below 70 degrees in LA, order this massive bowl of life-affirming veal broth, chewy egg noodles, and bone-in beef short rib. It’s the kind of warm, slow-cooked dish you should eat all by yourself when it’s gloomy and you need some beefy, basil-topped comfort. Senator Susan Collins says authorities know of at least 200 other black market marijuana grows operating in rural Maine. She tells CBS 13, "[These illegal marijuana grows] are popping up everywhere. After revisiting the most likely haunted John Proctor house featured in season 2, Kristina helped Jon face his fear of heights, thanks to a lighthouse in need of a renovation. Jon revealed that he is "incredibly afraid of heights," but Kristina coerced him to make the trek to the top. "We get up to the top and there is this thin iron railing that was like rusty and everything, and yeah, I almost fainted when I was up there. It was terrifying, but for Kristina, I did it," Jon said. Adding to that unsavory past is the fact that another pipe broke while owners Barbara and Chris were away from the house, and the water damage ruined a big chunk of the main floor. Last season, they remodeled the owner’s bedroom and bathroom after a water leak from a cracked pipe.

What is addictive information? by Lucas Modolo UX Collective

addictive design

While distracted driving is nothing new (Americans have been eating hamburgers and fries while driving for decades), texting while driving is particularly dangerous because it combines multiple types of distraction. Looking at a text takes the driver’s eyes off the road (visual distraction), at least one hand off the wheel (manual distraction), and the mind off the task (cognitive distraction). It’s easy to say that people should not text and drive, and many states and countries have passed laws to this effect.

Problem 1: Manipulative algorithms

Given ethical limitations, prospective studies examining the impact of extreme dietary imbalances (high-sugar, or high-fat) during human pregnancy cannot be undertaken. Rodent models show that such dietary extremes (high-sugar and/or high-fat) can impact fetal neurodevelopment, providing evidence of “addiction transfer” from mother to the newborn (233). These animal studies highlight the importance of biological processes (absence of social factors) in the development of FA. Specifically, maternal exposure to drugs of abuse or to highly palatable foods during both the pre- and postnatal period alter behavior via the DA reward system (234, 235) and MOR (236) of the offspring. Intrauterine nutritional experiments in animal models have demonstrated perturbations in hormone (e.g., insulin, leptin, ghrelin) signaling that interact with the development of the reward system in the VTA. Both under- and overfeeding have the potential to increase obesity prevalence in the offspring by way of the DA and opioid systems (237) and such effects have been observed at the intergenerational level (238, 239).

UX patterns to boost engagement and addictive design patterns to avoid

However, others have not been able to modify feeding behavior when specific DA agonists or antagonists were used (103, 104). Recently, chemogenetically activating DA neurons in the VTA that project to the NAc disrupted feeding patterns (105). In part, these dissimilar findings show that it is very hard to propose that only one neurotransmitter or hormone is responsible for driving behavior. I would argue that at any minute we fall at some point on a spectrum ranging from totally addicted to totally obsessed. Right now, I have not checked my email for 15 minutes and I am feeling anxious and when I look at my phone I see that I have an email from my younger son and I feel pleasure. It’s a bit of both but our work consistently shows that the anxiety system makes us keep our phones close by and makes us constantly check in.

In our latest study of adults, the typical college student has active accounts on nearly 6 sites that they visit at least once a week and most are accessed daily. If social media is the driving force behind your addiction/obsession move all social media apps to the last page of your home screen and hide them in a folder so that they are not stimuli that drag you into their world. From a design perspective, this means that product should be designed to require a certain amount of input from users. This investment by users (be it time, effort, or something else) increases their bond with the product.

More and more people are adopting healthier lifestyles, including social media detoxing and overall spending less time in the digital world. Part of the reason for that is, I think, that these large game companies have access to an incredible trove of data. So one thing that a lot of the designers do is they'll release different versions of missions ...

It treats workers with respect and fairness, not like objects to be used and discarded. And it understands that the environment is a shared home that we all depend on for our survival, not a dumping ground for toxic waste. In short, humane design is necessary because it is based on principles of justice and care. These are the principles that we must use to build a world that is safe for all of us—a world in which everyone can thrive.

Facebook and Instagram are two companies that have been criticized for using addictive techniques. For example, Facebook has been accused of using variable rewards, such as notifications and likes, to keep users engaged and addicted. Instagram has also been accused of using techniques such as infinite scrolling and autoplay to keep users engaged for longer periods of time. User interface design is a critical component of technology companies, as it determines how users interact with the product. Second, it needs to be easy to use so that users can easily navigate the platform and find the content they’re looking for.

addictive design

The app allows you to compete with your friends and stay engaged with the experience. Also, you have to progress through the app challenges to unlock new challenges, which gives users incentives and motivates to keep using the app. For example, the use of color is a common tool that designers use to influence our emotions. Colors can create different moods and feelings, which can affect how we interact with an interface.

To form a motivation, the user must feel the need to get into the app, FOMO (Fear of missing out) is a great example of that. Here is where the Seeking System comes, making us feel the need of being constantly receiving new informations. Over the past few decades, we have helped build a corporate culture that systematically prioritizes short-term gains over longer-term product health.

For instance, rats maintained on an intermittent sugar schedule display cross-sensitization to amphetamine (210) and rats sensitized to amphetamine increase their locomotion when exposed to 10% sucrose solution (211). Furthermore, sucrose intake has been shown to enhance behavioral sensitization induced by cocaine and ethanol (212, 213). Biochemically and behaviorally these two driving forces are not the same although people use them interchangeably saying, “I’m addicted to my smartphone” or “I am obsessed with social media” as though they are the same. Biochemically, addictions typically involve neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin as part of the dopaminergic system plus other brain chemicals. Basically, dopamine motivates the addictive action with the brain’s desire to have more and more while serotonin is responsible for making us feel happy and satiated and then inhibits the need for more dopamine.

BJ Fogg’s model is another model concerned with consumer behavior change which you might find interesting. Not only the way the content is delivered, but the nature of the content is important to justify the addiction. For example, if a free book streaming platform were invented, would it be as addictive as Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? Seeing a gap between our ideas/intentions and the work we do every day, we have decided to create a more practical guide to provoking change. The buzzing of push notifications, the nagging red bubbles on apps, and endless feeds create the perfect storm of distractions.

We don’t know if we will be rewarded with interesting content when the page is reloaded or just with meaningless photographs. While the products we build every day have evolved, our ways of thinking about user engagement have scarcely changed since the days of dial-up. We assume that the higher the metrics, the more successful the business and, thus, the smarter the product designer.

Changes in DNA methylation appear to modify genetic expression of DA transporter and MOR (240). While more research has been conducted using a high-fat compared to high-sugar model, caloric sweeteners have been shown to favor hedonic over homeostatic mechanisms (241). Hormonal regulation of food reward may partially explain why sucrose is preferred over artificial sweeteners.

That is, designers should ask themselves why they are designing something before starting to work on it. By understanding the purpose of their work, they can make sure that everything they do meets that goal. And by putting themselves in the users' shoes, they can make sure that the end result will be something that users will love. When Charles Darwin postulated the evolution theory, he suggested that a trait would emerge if it contributed to survival and increase the reproductive success of a species. Plants have evolved protective measures to prevent herbivores from eating them.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic night on your Hawaiian vacation or a festive Hawaiian experience for the whole family we’ll make every moment unforgettable. The Star of Honolulu is more than happy to help accommodate meals for each guest. Vegetarian, vegan, chicken and gluten-free options are all available with at least 24-hours advanced notice prior to your dinner cruise.

Introducing an incredible way to cruise in style with the STAR’s signature experience, the Nova Five Star Sunset Dinner & Show cruise. Enjoy stunning 360 degree views from the exclusive top deck Super Nova Room, a “champagne” toast by the captain and a 5-course lobster and tenderloin of beef dinner served to own private table. Enjoy exquisite cocktails, live jazz and breathtaking views of the Waikiki fireworks and Hawaiian sunset. This was a fun island activity and a romantic dinner for two. Other passengers also looked to be having a great time. The best part of the cruise was the opportunity to see the waikiki beach from the water.

Experience the already great atmosphere while live performers elevate the experience. Enjoy a relaxing live jazz performance during dinner, and afterwards, immerse yourself in the rhythm of Hawaiian favorites and captivating dances from across Polynesia. Guests will be served a complimentary glass of champagne upon being seated at their table and can choose two premium drinks of their preference.

The singer on the other hand was wonderful and had a beautiful voice. My expectation was there would be some mellow jazz playing while we were eating, I suppose the singer had to provide some entertainment on one of the other decks while the piano played upstairs. All in all an okay experience but the photo ads and descriptions are playing it up a bit. Again best part of the voyage was the view.

The weathe...r cooperated and we also had a beautiful sunset. All of the food was picture perfect and tasty but smaller portions than I expected and it was certainly the smallest maine lobster I have ever seen. The upstairs on the ship was set up like a very nice restaurant, white tablecloths and the wait staff were in black suits - very fancy. The wait staff was polite and as professional as could be but as far as I could tell there was only one waiter for the entire top section this made getting drinks a bit slow. The jazz music was mostly just piano and was too loud for the room the piano had a microphone set up and it seems like it could have been turned down a notch. I shouldn't have to strain to hear the person I'm eating with who it just across the table, the couple next to us made the same comment about the volume.

Join us for a fun tropical evening on the Pacific Star Sunset Buffet & Show Cruise! Enjoy a welcome Mai Tai, delicious Pacific Rim dinner buffet with roast beef carving station, fun Polynesian show and beautiful sunset and coastline views. You’ll feel the spirit of Aloha with our friendly crew on this high-value sunset cruise.

Enhance your evening with window seating at a private table for up to 8 people, or center round-table seating for 9 people or more. Enjoy exquisite cuisine prepared by our master chefs, premium cocktails and live Hawaiian entertainment for the most memorable experience in Hawaii. On Fridays, we stay out an extra hour for an opportunity to see the Waikiki fireworks. There are few things more impressive than an ocean view sunset in Hawaii. As darkness descends, watch the lights of the Honolulu sky come alive with stars. Enjoy sweeping views from your own private table in the luxurious Super Nova Room on the fourth deck.

Just as important for many people traveling alone is the opportunity to meet other like-minded solo travelers through meet-and-greet receptions and organized group dining for solo cruisers. Take your pick of Holland America, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, newcomer Virgin Voyages and even Cunard. If you're after a spoil-yourself solo vacation, luxury lines like Seabourn and Silversea offer reduced fares for those traveling alone.

On Silversea's expedition sailings, you can also share meals with ship naturalists and expedition guides who join passengers in public dining venues. From my experience, they are always amenable to a friendly dining companion and some good conversation. Head to the main lounge just before dinner on a Silversea ship, and there's a good chance you'll be pulled into a conversation with a group of complete strangers who will extend a dinner invitation. This has happened to me so many times on Silversea ships that I almost count on it.

The dining experience on cruises offers a blend of elegance, variety, and the opportunity to meet others, providing solo travelers a fulfilling culinary journey. Ambassador’s cruises contain an extensive programme of activities for solo passengers, including a ‘Welcome Get Together’ and guided tours together with other solo travellers. Other onboard entertainment ranges from West End-style shows to comedy nights, with plenty of opportunities to meet others. If cruising during winter, visit Norway to see wondrous fjords and (possibly) the aurora borealis, with the Land of the Northern Lights package. Unlike Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, Silversea hasn't created a specific cabin category for solo travelers.

Some of the best activities to meet new people are the Billboard Onboard, casinos, and the fitness area. The best rooms for singles looking for an adventure of a lifetime include the Ocean View, Verandah, and the Inside. If you’re looking to meet new people, visit the Skywalkers Nightclub, hot tub, pool areas, and the Festivals of the World. Every room aboard the Ruby Princess aims to give passengers both comfort and space. When booking your solo trip on the Ruby Princess, stay in the Oceanview, Balcony, Interior, or Mini-Suite. The Carnival Cruise Line aims for every passenger to make the most of their vacation at sea with fun activities like obstacle courses, water slides, shows, and mini-bowling.

There are a variety of reasons why you might want to take a cruise as a single person or solo traveler. Maybe you’re coming out of a relationship and want to meet new and interesting people in an all-inclusive environment. Or maybe you just want to go on lots of cruises, with or without the people you love.

Houthi rebels strike U S.-owned ship, raising tensions Los Angeles Times

Sunday’s missile launch toward the American warship also marked the first U.S.-acknowledged fire by the Houthis since the U.S. and allied nations began strikes Friday on the rebels after weeks of assaults on shipping vessels in the Red Sea. The attack on the Gibraltar Eagle, later claimed by the Houthis, further escalates tensions gripping the Red Sea after American-led strikes on the rebels. The Houthis’ attacks have roiled global shipping amid Israel’s war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, targeting a crucial corridor linking Asian and Mideast energy and cargo shipments to the Suez Canal onward to Europe. Thursday's incident occurred during the early evening hours (local time) when the missiles and drones were detected moving northward above the waters of the Red Sea.

U.S. Shoots Down Several Missiles and Drones Launched From Yemen

Yemen’s Houthis have taken responsibility for firing a cruise missile that landed in an open area of Israel, marking the first time a projectile launched by the Iran-backed group struck the Jewish nation. The Pentagon said it shot down missiles fired from Yemen and potentially headed towards Israel. The report came just a day after U.S. troops were attacked in Iraq and Syria, stoking fears of a regional expansion of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The Iran-Israel air conflict presents an unprecedented success story for air and missile defense and highlights the use of these defenses to save lives, protect property, and reduce pressures on policymakers. The post has been updated with the joint statement, information about US missiles and more background on the strikes against Houthi targets. The Houthi rebels have said their strikes on Red Sea ships are in response to Israel's military campaign against Hamas in Gaza.

Pentagon says it shot down Yemen missiles that may have been headed towards Israel

Previously, missiles and drones fired from Yemen had hit neighboring countries or were intercepted by air defenses. The Houthis, which control most of Yemen, have been repeatedly launching drones and missiles at ships in the Red Sea since mid-November, claiming they were supporting Israel. The strikes are separate from the retaliatory measures the United States took on Friday in Syria and Iraq, and are related to ongoing actions to defend US ships and international commercial vessels in the Red Sea, according to one administration official. Recent strikes by the US military in the Middle East make it difficult to reach a political solution in the region, Iran's foreign minister told the United Nations' special envoy for Yemen on Saturday, according to Iran's state-run news agency.

The U.S. Maritime Administration, under the Transportation Department, also issued a warning Monday saying there continues to be “a high degree of risk to commercial vessels” traveling near Yemen. A missile fired by Houthi rebels slammed into a Norwegian-flagged tanker in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen near a key maritime chokepoint. Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree claimed the attack in a recorded television address that aired Monday night. It’s unclear from where the Houthi militia's missiles were fired but they were headed in a northerly direction, an official said.

So, it appears that the Houthis have yet to fully delve into their varied arsenal of projectiles, which also includes a host of anti-ship missiles. As Israeli strikes continue to pound Gaza and kill civilians, Iran has repeatedly warned that if they don’t stop, “new fronts” could be opened in the war by the “resistance axis” – a network of political and armed groups aligned to Iran. "Because if the Houthis shoot at a U.S. ship there will be little doubt that it would have been at Tehran’s direction." Al Asad airbase in western Iraq experienced indirect fire on Thursday according to a U.S. official.

Why did Yemen’s Houthis launch attack on Israel, will it help Gaza?

The U.S. military said it had destroyed seven missiles and three drones on Monday in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen that threatened merchant ships and U.S. The strike was conducted in "self defense" against a Houthi cruise missile "prepared to launch against ships in the Red Sea" at 4 a.m. The USS Gravely and USS Carney fired the land-attack cruise missiles and F/A-18 fighter jets from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier were also involved, officials said. U.S., U.K. Launch Strikes Against Houthi Targets in Yemen to Protect Red Sea Shipping - Department of Defense

U.S., U.K. Launch Strikes Against Houthi Targets in Yemen to Protect Red Sea Shipping.

Since November, the rebels have repeatedly targeted ships in the Red Sea, saying they were avenging Israel’s offensive in Gaza against Hamas. But they have frequently targeted vessels with tenuous or no clear links to Israel, imperiling shipping in a key route for global trade between Asia, the Mideast and Europe. The attacks were the latest assaults by the rebels in their campaign against ships traveling through the Red Sea and surrounding waters, which has disrupted global trade amid Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Timeline

Tehran backs the Houthis in Yemen, Shia armed groups in Iraq, the government of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria, Hezbollah in Lebanon and various Palestinian factions. The Houthis, a Shiite rebel group allied with Iran that seized Yemen’s capital in 2014, did not immediately acknowledge the attack. Satellite-tracking data analyzed by the AP showed the Eagle Gibraltar had been bound for the Suez Canal, but rapidly turned around at the time of the attack. “The ship has reported no injuries or significant damage and is continuing its journey,” Central Command said. A flurry of incidents underscored the heightened risks that the conflict between Israel and Hamas could spiral into a wider war. The risk to U.S. forces and U.S. interests in the region has increased particularly in the wake of a deadly explosion at a hospital in Gaza earlier this week that inflamed regional tensions.

On Wednesday, three drones were shot down by U.S. military forces as they neared bases in western and northern Iraq, another drone was shot down near U.S. forces in eastern Syria on Thursday. The Department of Defense provides the military forces needed to deter war and ensure our nation's security. Cook said the U.S. strikes were launched from the USS Nitze, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer operating in the Gulf of Aden. But many of the attacks have been on simple cargo ships passing through the area, forcing firms to take longer and more expensive journeys through Africa.

The Houthis’ Al-Masirah satellite news channel said the strikes happened near the port city of Hodeida, but offered no assessment of their damage. Shaan Shaikh is the deputy director of the CSIS Missile Defense Project, specializing in missile proliferation, air defense, and non-state actors. For years, Western officials and a number of Arab counterparts have accused Iran of providing arms, combat training and funding for the Houthis, which it denies. Tehran, however, publicly backs the Houthi movement as a member of the axis which supports Palestinians. “In addition, the Houthis have emerged more powerful from years of air strikes by Saudi Arabia; beyond sending a message, it would be difficult for Israeli retaliation to hurt the Houthis,” he said.

Ansar Allah has organised anti-Israeli protests in Yemen and circulated propaganda from other Iranian-backed militant groups but has yet to claim any attacks in the wake of the war that Hamas instigated on 7 October. He added that the Pentagon did not take the series of attacks on U.S. bases as a reason to believe the Israel-Hamas conflict had grown to include additional Iran allies. With regional tensions continuing to rise, the U.S. has been on high alert for activity from Iranian proxy groups like the Houthis. Several armed groups aligned with Iran have vowed to target U.S. military bases in the Middle East if it intervened in an expected Israeli ground invasion of Gaza.

"U.S. Forces struck and destroyed four Houthi anti-ship ballistic missiles. These missiles were prepared to launch from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and presented an imminent threat to both merchant and U.S. Navy ships in the region." While parties have taken some steps toward ending the violence, continued Houthi possession and use of long-range missiles and drones complicates prospects for restoring stability. The presence of a hostile actor on its southern flank with long-range projectiles significantly raises the stakes for Saudi Arabia, making Riyadh less willing to accept a robust Houthi role in a future Yemeni government.
